How can we make systems used for naming and classifying plane shapes meaningful for students so that they realise that the systems are simple and logical?

This module addresses one big idea of geometric reasoning that is naming and classifying plane shapes. It contains a number of hands-on activities, including; Property match up, Quadrilateral property quiz and an investigation, requiring reasoning skills. There is the opportunity to use Geogebra and to explore interactive quadrilaterals online. Teachers will be able to refresh their understandings of plane shapes and to explore them further.

This module is one of four modules on Geometric Reasoning; the others are: congruency and similarity, geometric proof, and circle geometry.

Reasoning about plane shapes is based on some of the material found in AAMT’s Top Drawer Teachers.
