Participants watch a video which shows how a complex pattern can be constructed by adding successive ‘rings’ of pattern blocks around a central block, and then analyse it. There are other classroom activities which include constructing a block ‘staircase’, drawing rectangular grids, and patterns in paper-folding.
This module emphasises the structure of rectangular grids and arrays, and their importance in underpinning concepts of multiplication and area.
This module is one of five modules about Patterns; the others are: patterns are everywhere, mathematical patterns are regular, patterns repeat, and patterns can be found in shapes.
Thinking about growing patterns is based on some of the material found in AAMT’s Top Drawer Teachers.
