Module 1 provides a comprehensive guide to the five ‘big ideas’ of fractions: the part-whole concept, fractions as a measure, as division and as operators, and ratio. This module is designed as a half-day workshop, but can easily be presented as a series of one- or two-hour workshops.

Module 1 revisits the different types of fraction constructs. It uses hands-on activities to investigate these five ‘big ideas’ and presents concrete, pictorial and abstract models to consolidate concepts. Strong links are made to the Australian Curriculum and the progression of fraction concepts through the year levels.
